Thomas is a great hero, and I love that while he is a bit of a rakish charmer, his defining trait is that he cares for his family, and is willing to sacrifice his own happiness to provide for them. One reason why I feel like it worked so well is because it was paired with an element that helped raise the stakes, in that he needs to marry for money, and she doesn’t have any, which provides a great answer for the “why don’t they just make it official?” conundrum. The first being the trope I think I mentioned recently that the “kissing/intimacy lessons” trope is one I’ve slowly come to love in all its forms, and it’s masterfully executed here.
